A sweet collection of works by the American fireside poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), who, aside from his poetry, is well known for his work as an educator. Longfellow spoke at least eight languages and was the first American to fully translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. This edition is accompanied by multiple black and white engravings and a red text border. In good condition with a cracked front hinge, abrasion to the reverse of the front free endpaper where a bookplate once was, a couple of ink inscriptions to preliminaries, and the odd bit of foxing. Lovely illustrations throughout with generally clean text. Bound in red publisher's cloth, very typically late Victorian in style, featuring a black lyre and border motif, red blossoms covering a gilt-stamped cover block and gilt titles. The spine is sunned, with the front board pattern mirrored. Good for a very nice reading copy. Further decorated with gilt edges. 699pg. 18.5 x 11 cm. My books are packed and posted using recycled materials wherever possible. #150
